Miso Cards is launched!

I'm happy to announce that miso cards is live. This has been a project that i've had in my head for incredibly long and it's even been built a couple of times using different tech stacks and that ofc means it also has been rewritten a couple of times. But at last, here i am and i'm glad it has finally been released.

Let's start with some history

The idea behind Miso Cards came around early 2020 during the pandemic. I've always liked to draw and draw a lot of doodles, i'm not a very talented artist and i usually stick to my doodly, street art-ish style.

But as many other artists, i had the idea of drawing and printing a classic deck of playing cards. 52 cards, i shuffled a deck of cards and pulled random cards and drew them on my ipad. The shuffle was mostly to keep it interesting, to never know what card would be drawn. But it also locked my deck so i couldn't use it for play, i think i still have it shuffled somewhere since i never finished the deck.

Software time

When im not drawing, i code. So i wanted to have a project and wanted to combine it with my artistry interest. Naturally i wanted to code a software where you upload drawn playing cards and it lets you design and order a playing card deck, this was the idea that later became miso cards.

I started coding it a bit and also then learned that many other artists wanted to or had created their own playing cards. So i wanted to add the social aspect of it too, where you could trade and use different playing cards by other artists, creating a sort of crazy playing card deck that is a mix of artists.

More than playing cards

After a couple of iterations i remembered my young days on the school yard. We traded pokémon cards during recess and the ones of us that liked drawing drew our own pokémon cards. I can't remember them being good looking but i remember it being fun.

I wanted to bring that sort of joy to this project, a space where you could create and trade little art cards, or trading cards.

Around this time is about the third time i built the project and i never really came far. At this time the project was also called Pocket Cards.

The final build

The project had been on and off ice and rewritten over and over and i thought of more and more things i'd like it to be. I also thought it was a bit sad that it never became anything, so i decided to scrap all old code and just rewrite it all and release a minimum working version of it. When setting it up it was still called Pocket Cards. By this time i had improved my development skills significantly since 2020 and i also figured out a fast way of working. When it was almost done i saw that pocket cards was taken and honestly i never liked the name as well so i needed a new name.

Renamed to Miso cards

At the time i worked on a mobile app that worked like an analog camera and it was called miso camera. The name just sounded nice to me even though it had nothing to do with miso soup. The app was never officially released and im yet to do it, but i needed a name for my new trading card website and so i stole the name and Miso Cards was born.

Moving forward from here

The hardest part of building things is getting users. I'm an artists in my head, i always liked to create things and that's what lead me from my guitar, to sketch books, to writing code. Development is just another way for me to express creativity and getting users and marketing etc is hard and honestly not as fun. But i like learning and a challenge is always fun.

So moving forward i'm going to try to get more artists to join. It's no fun just having my cards on the platform.

I like creating cards so i'll continue to do that and while doing so i see more and more things i want to add and if you find things you'd like to see on the site then feel free to reach out. The idea is that this will be a creative space for all users.

Outro

Thanks for reading all of this and being part of Miso Cards. I hope the look back was interesting and i think it's nice to start a project with a bit of history. It's feels very nice to have Miso Cards created and i look forward to improve upon it. It's so early stages but it's great!
